Soviet: The Beauty of Diversity

00:31 0 Comments

There is a rainbow in my world today,
With every word your write my way.
Colors of emotions flow in harmony,
as they spread across the sky in unity.
Wrap me in your red, orange and blue,
fill me with the violet passion of you.
You make the sky shine after that rain,
softly your soul pushes away the pain.
In every luxurious line that you say,
you are the rainbow in my world today.

When it comes to heritage and culture, South Africa is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Nowhere in the world is there a country with more culture and ethnic diversity, or a country that applauds its differences more.

On 24 September 2015 South Africans are encouraged to honour our country’s diversity in beliefs and traditions as we celebrate our 10th Heritage Day.

The Heritage of Heritage Day:
Heritage Day was originally known as Shaka Day, commemorating the Zulu King for his fundamental role in uniting Zulu clans into a cohesive nation. However, when the recommendation of the Public Holidays Bill was presented to the Parliament of South Africa, the date was not part of the proposal. As a result, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) objected to the bill, wanting Shaka Day to be celebrated throughout the nation. A compromise was reached and the 24th of September was given the title of “Heritage Day” and became a national public holiday.

The Diversity we Celebrate:
South Africa boasts one of the most complex and diverse nations in the world. Of the 51.7 million South Africans, over 41 million are black, 4.5 million are white, 4.6 million are coloured and about 1.3 million Indian or Asian. The cultures are then further divided into four major black ethnic groups, including Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and Swazi), Sotho, Shangaan-Tsonga and Venda, Afrikaans and English (of British or European descent) white ethnic groups, mixed race coloured ethnicity, and indigenous Khoisan.

These different cultures lead to 11 different official languages spoken in South Africa, including English, Afrikaans, Ndebele, Sepedi, Xhosa, Venda, Tswana, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Zwazi and Tsonga. Of course, many other international languages are also spoken.

Each group has particular traditions, observations and heritage. There are a few celebrations that are shared by all, and new commemorations are made as time goes on. However, the one point that unites us all is that we are proudly South African.

“This is when South Africans celebrate the diverse cultural heritage that makes up a ‘rainbow nation’. It is the day to celebrate the contribution of all South Africans to the building of South Africa.”

Soviet loves South Africa, and all its diversity. That’s why we have a real denim for real South African’s needs and tastes. Our wide range of clothing and apparel celebrates being different, while making you look beautiful. Celebrate true South African heritage with us by visiting a Soviet store today.

Croatia: A Reflection of Heaven

Croatia: A Reflection of Heaven

Beauty is defined as being the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind.

If this is the definition of beauty, then Croatia is so much more than beautiful. Croatia is 56 594 km2 of pure heaven.

Situated between the crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea and the jagged, mighty Dinaric Alps, Croatia is the perfect escape from reality. With a tumultuous history of being thrown between competing kingdoms, it has a rich cultural mix of Roman churches, Venetian palaces and Napoleonic forts scattered throughout its mainland. The towns are mapped with paving stones, worn with over 1 400 years of history, that lead to ancient walls and stone embellished houses transporting you to a different time.

If history is not your thing, then you simply need to look at the unspoiled beauty of the coastline. As the Pearl of the Atlantic, Croatia boasts an array of picturesque lakes, dramatic waterfalls and awe-inducing canyons. The island speckled shore opens opportunities of cooling waters, summertime madness and thrilling adventures. From hiking, mountain-biking and rafting, you will be sure to find something here that will get your blood pumping.

Croatia has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry and sunny weather during Summer months, and mild - sometimes wet - weather in Winter. The average temperatures lie in the mid-to-high 20°C in Summer. Winter is a bit cooler, but very rarely goes under 5°C.

However, the beauty doesn’t just lie in the landscapes and the climate: the Croats are the friendliest, most hospitable people you could ever wish to share a meal with. With provincially grown grapes for mind-seducing wines, olive trees to produce rich oils and such and rich, adventurous dishes made from the local catch-of-the-day, these people are eager to share their food, drink and stories. The rich diversity of the country offers you glitz and glamour, with people relaxing their gold-adorned bodies on yachts and modernised clubs. But you will also find the buckets and spades digging for food and work just to make a living in this paradise.

With all this beauty, culture, history and love, Croatia is an undiscovered paradise full of hidden treasures, heart-quickening experiences and memories that will flow through the pages of history.

Spring Beauty

02:21 0 Comments

Hush, Can you hear it?
The rustling in the grass,
Bringing you the welcome news
Winter's day is past.
Soft, Can you feel it?
The warm caressing breeze,
Telling you the sticky buds
Are bursting on the trees.
Look, Can you see them?
The primrose in the lane,
Now you must believe it -
Spring is here again.

May Fenn

Spring is the most beautifully majestic season of the year. After months of cold, grey and dull weather, the world suddenly comes alive with colour, scents and sounds that give you that zest for life that you’ve been looking for.

Here are a few things we are looking forward to with the new, pretty season:

1. The smell of a thunderstorm brewing in the air
2. More daylight to enjoy the beautiful sights that nature has to offer
3. Baby animals, pouncing in fields of newly bloomed flowers that aren’t on Facebook, but actually showing off their cuteness in real life
4. Bright green leaves and beautiful pink blossoms sprouting from all the trees, and green thumbs sprouting in all the residential gardens
5. Walking around in your favourite Soviet jeans and a spaghetti strap top without freezing. Showing some skin is the best thing about spring
6. Fresh citrusy Spring fruit that tastes of the approaching Summer
7. Soviet’s SS2015 launch with trendy, sexy items that will make you feel as beautiful as Spring
